The Artwork: Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night

Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a leading designer of the shin-hanga movement and its most admired painter of kachō-e, bird-and-flower pictures. This print sets a flowering cherry branch against the night, with the moon behind it, one of his quiet, much-loved nocturnal designs.

Koson worked through the woodblock medium with a painter's eye for atmosphere. The branch is drawn with a few sure lines; the blossoms are softly graded so they seem to catch the moonlight. The night sky is laid in as a calm, even field. The effect is still and weightless, the blossoms held for a moment before they fall.

The image carries the Japanese idea of mono no aware, the gentle awareness that beautiful things do not last. Hung in a bedroom or a quiet sitting area, it brings that mood of seasonal calm. The soft palette and unhurried composition suit rooms made for rest.

The Artist: Ohara Koson

Ohara Koson (1877–1945), who also used the art names Shōson and Hōson, was one of the foremost Japanese artists of the Shin-Hanga ('new prints') movement, particularly celebrated for his exquisite kachō-e (bird-and-flower pictures) and animal prints.

Born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, he initially studied Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) under Suzuki Kason in Tokyo. His early career included illustrating books and Russo-Japanese War scenes. Around 1900, he began designing woodblock prints, initially working with publishers like Daikokuya and Kokkeidō. These early works often depicted scenes from the Russo-Japanese War, but his true passion and talent lay in capturing the beauty of the natural world.
