The Artwork: Pink Parrot on Rock

Nakayama Sūgakudō was a student of the renowned bird-and-flower painter Kōno Bairei, working in the late Edo and early Meiji period from the 1850s into the 1860s. His Pink Parrot on Rock belongs to the genre called kacho-e — "bird-and-flower pictures" — one of the most disciplined and observational traditions in Japanese woodblock art. Where ukiyo-e captured the floating world of theatre and pleasure quarters, kacho-e turned attention to the natural world: a single bird on a single branch, rendered with botanical precision.

He was active during the later part of the Edo period, a time when kachō-ga was a well-established and popular genre. The kachō-ga genre itself has a long history in East Asian art, and in Ukiyo-e, it offered artists a way to depict the beauty of the natural world, often with symbolic or poetic associations tied to the seasons. Nakayama Sūgakudō's works typically feature detailed and aesthetically pleasing renderings of various birds, flowers, plants, and sometimes insects. His compositions are generally elegant and focus on the natural grace and characteristics of his subjects. He would have used the traditional woodblock p . . . Read More >>
