From Kawasaki Kyosen's Collected Illustrations of Japanese Toys (Kyosen Omocha-shu), this plate sets a large brown lucky-god figure, round and smiling in the manner of Hotei or Daikoku of the Seven Lucky Gods, beside a small laughing child figure with a money-bag. Kyosen (1877-1942) recorded the household talismans of Japan among its toys, and these good-fortune figures, sold at shrines and fairs, are among the most beloved.

The sheet is omocha-e, the picture of toys and talismans, drawn from life and printed by woodblock. The large figure is held in warm earth tones, the small child set off in bright cloth, and both stand on open paper with a red seal at the side. The contour is calm and the colour soft; the warmth is in the subject.

On a wall the print is genial and grounded. The broad, smiling figure brings a settled, good-natured note to a room, and the small child adds a lighter second beat. It suits an entryway, a sitting room, or a study, and sits well besi . . . Read More >>

Kawasaki Kyosen (1877–1942) was a Japanese painter and print designer active during the Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa periods. While perhaps not as internationally renowned as some of his Ukiyo-e predecessors or Shin-Hanga contemporaries, Kyosen made notable contributions, particularly in the realm of kuchi-e (literally 'mouth pictures'), which were woodblock-printed frontispieces for popular novels, literary magazines, and even sheet music.

Born in Kyoto, Kyosen studied traditional Japanese painting under several masters, including Bज्ञानrō Unsō. He developed a style that was both rooted in traditional aesthetics and adaptable to the illustrative needs of the publishing industry of his time.
