This plate is part of Collected Illustrations of Japanese Toys, the woodblock album in which Kawasaki Kyōsen (1877–1942) recorded the folk playthings of old Japan. Kyōsen drew the toy from observation and cut it as a woodblock. The black ribs of the parasol, the red and green of the robe and the pale dabs below are laid in as flat, balanced colour. The open parasol arches over the figure, and the cream paper keeps the whole pose airy and clear.
