The Artwork: Kagozaiku Naniwa saikunin Ichida ShĹŤshichirĹŤ - Gallery-style

This is a portrait of Ichida Shōshichirō, an Osaka craftsman celebrated for kagozaiku, the art of woven bamboo, in a colour woodblock by Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865). Kunisada was among the most productive masters of the Utagawa school, and here he records a maker whose large woven figures drew crowds at the city's popular sideshow exhibitions. Naniwa is the old name for Osaka, and saikunin means craftsman.

The print is a nishiki-e, printed from several hand-carved blocks, one per colour, with fine outlines and soft bokashi shading in the manner of the Utagawa school. The drawing gives weight to both the man and his intricate woven work, so the image honours a craft as much as a person.

On a wall the image is warm and grounded. Its earthy tones and human subject settle easily beside wood, linen and other tactile materials, and bring a note of making and handwork to a room. It suits a study, a reading nook, or a hallway.
