The Artwork: Titmice on Cherry Branch - Gallery-style

Small titmice perch among the blossoms of a flowering cherry branch in this colour woodblock after Ohara Koson (1877–1945), a classic subject of kachō-e, the Japanese bird-and-flower tradition. Koson worked within shin-hanga, the new-print movement of the early twentieth century, and spent his career on the close, affectionate study of birds. Here a few birds and a sprig of cherry are enough to hold a whole season.

The print is made from several hand-carved blocks, one for each colour, printed onto paper. The soft transitions in the petals and feathers come from bokashi, a gradation worked by hand across the block so one tone blends gently into the next. The branch is set against an open ground, which keeps the image fresh and uncrowded.

On a wall the image carries a springlike lightness. Its pale, fresh palette settles easily beside light wood and natural materials, so it suits a calm, pared-back room. It works well in a bedroom, a kitchen, or a quiet workspace . . . Read More >>
