The Artwork: Mystical Bird - Gallery-style

A mythical bird spreads its wings in this colour woodblock by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), often read as a hō-ō, the auspicious phoenix of Chinese and Japanese legend. Hokusai ranged far beyond his famous waves and views, and his designs of birds and beasts carry the same firm drawing and invention. The image keeps the creature's identity gently open, so it reads as much as a presence as a species.

The print is made from several hand-carved blocks, one for each colour, with a firm outline and soft bokashi gradations in the sky and feathers. That mix of clear contour and graded wash is part of Hokusai's strength: the bird is precisely drawn yet set in air that seems to move.

On a wall the image is striking but composed. In East Asian tradition the phoenix, or hō-ō, is a sign of peace and good fortune, said to appear only in tranquil times, which gives the print a quietly hopeful note.
